True Roots led a workshop, “Sustainability of Rural Grassroots Organizations,” for RENAMUR, Mexico’s National Network of Rural Women.
RENAMUR is a civil society association that brings together numerous organizations from across the country that work to improve living conditions of rural women through economic and human development programs. The Mexican social investment foundation Fundación Merced sponsored the True Roots’ workshop.
Before beginning to design and tailor the training, True Roots applied a diagnostic survey to identify the areas of focus most pertinent to the 22 groups taking part. Based on the results, True Roots decided to present an intensive workshop on building sustainability of small, grassroots, rural organizations like those in the RENAMUR network.
True Roots’ workshop recognized sustainability as a multifaceted concept – and considered components like human development and capacity-building for self-management – as critical to strengthening small teams in grassroots organizations.
The exercises and tools shared allowed participants to identify five main challenges limiting development in their distinct organizations. By extension, they identified issues affecting RENAMUR’s development as a whole, and were able to select context-specific solutions to these challenges for the short- and mid-term.
